March … Ides … Blah Blah Blah

Inching ever closer to Spring under a fresh blanket of snow!  Welcome to it!

The Djinn are hard at work doing what they do and ramping up for the first of their local performances post-3rd Coast Tribal in Texas.  It’s a huge year for us with the potential for tons of travel … if we want to scare ourselves, we look at the calendar and let our minds boggle that we’re booked through November now.  Yoinks!  Still … who can’t fit in more dance?  If you still know your own name, you’re not trying!  :-)   Here’s what’s coming up:

On March 14th, Mischievous Djinn will be performing a new piece choreographed by Zuza for the Asharah show.  Put on  by Bohemian Underground Workshop (lovingly called “Boho U”), this not only showcases the amazingness that is visiting dignitary Asharah but benefits the National Fibromyalgia Association.  For more information:  Bohemian Belly Bash.

On March 21st, we’ll be dancing the part of the elemental goddesses in the Spring Equinox celebration at Lake Harriet Spiritual Community in Minneapolis:  LHSC Celebration.  Under the tremendous direction of Steven Johnson, with original music by Undercrypt, the evening promises to be spectacular.

Lots more coming up, but that is the formal stuff for March.  We hope to see you soon!

The 4th Djinniye

It is with great delight and excitement that we announce the newest member of Mischievous Djinn – none other than our own Ms. Zuza!

Zuza has been a tribal force of nature for years – from the formation of Totally Northern Tribal to the stirrings of Boho U guerrilla improv; countless props, solos, productions, travels, and epic acts of dance kindness define her as a jewel within our community. We admire her craziness, her creativity, her dedication to the craft, her expertise, and her professionalism. We feel fortunate to have her as a part of our ensemble and vision.

Welcome, Ms. Zuza – and let’s get this party started! :-)

Order of Peaceful and Hold the Drama, Mama!

It is the intention of Mischievous Djinn from this point on to adopt and enact a “No Drama Policy”. Our goal is to explore both the art form and ourselves in the process … promoting peace and mutual respect within our community. We will be, henceforth, a No Drama, No Excuses dance group.

We’ve done our fair share of keeping old wounds fresh and talking smack, and that’s done. We are finished with the escapades of our dance adolescence – and excited by the prospects of growing up at last … especially as they include people we love and admire.

No Drama, No Excuses.

Join us.

3rd Coast Tribal!

We had an amazing time at 3rd Coast and offer our inexhaustible thanks to Zymirrah and Sahira of Urban Gypsy for being instigators, producers, trouble-makers and putting on 2 rounds of one helluva show! Wow, you guys – WOW. Big love to Ariellah – mentor, ass-kicker and friend. Awestruck thanks to John Compton, intimidating as hell and one of the nicest guys on earth. Congrats and hugs out to the MN Onslaught: Zuza, Akasha and Nilat for their beautiful peacock number and compassionate rides; Tara – for kicking it but good on Friday night; Amina – for the ’slowest dance she’s ever done’ (absolutely lovely), heart-to-heart talks, and so much backstage help we are speechless. Hugs to new friends and inspirations: Artemis, for taking us a bit under her wing (and tucking … endless tucking); Joy Herbst, the nurse practitioner by day and dancer extraordinaire by night … for friendship and protection against would-be torturers; Danielle and Kelly from Brazen Bellies, for Wild Turkey and Dr. Pepper … utterly devious and delightful. We’ll see you all soon, but never soon enough.
